Billy Jean KingNEW YORK - RainbowVision Properties announced today that sports legend and social activist Billie Jean King has signed a long-term, six-figure endorsement agreement for the developer's newproject in Palm Springs, California, and its pioneering debut project in Santa
Fe, New Mexico. RainbowVision Santa Fe is the first full-service condominium resort community for the LGBT population's "Second Fifty Years," offering both independent and assisted living, healthcare, dining, and fitness facilities.
As part of the agreement, Ms. King will advise on the design of and endorse the Billie Jean King Fitness & Tennis Center, located exclusively at RainbowVision Palm Springs. Ms. King has also approved and endorsed the Billie Jean King Fitness Center & Spa at RainbowVision Santa Fe. Ms. King will appear at the groundbreaking of RainbowVision's Palm Springs property in early 2007, followed by the formal ribbon cutting in 2008.
Ms. King has spent her life breaking barriers for women and minorities. "RainbowVision is opening new doors for LGBT Americans entering their second
50 years," said Billie Jean King. "It's an honor to be part of Joy Silver's vision and of a project that creates communities of equality where people can be themselves, live life to the fullest, and age with style."
Named by Life magazine as one of the "100 Most Important Americans of the 20th Century," Ms. King has long been a champion for social change and equality. Ms. King's extensive list of career firsts and other achievements in tennis and in life are legendary. She is a recognized health and fitness authority and advocates maintaining physical agility throughout life.
On the tennis court, Ms. King left a lasting and indelible mark. She won a record 20 Wimbledon titles with six of them in singles (1966-67-68-72-73-75), won the U.S. Open four times (1967-71-72-74), the French Open in 1972 and the Australian Open in 1968. She was ranked No. 1 in the world five times between 1966 and 1972 and was in the Top 10 a total of 17 years (beginning in 1960). Ms. King is the only woman to win U.S. singles titles on all 4 surfaces on which it has been played (grass, clay, carpet, and hard). She's also one of only 8 players to hold a singles title in each of the Grand Slam events.
"Billie Jean King is simply a legend, and we're proud to have her support," said RainbowVision President/CEO Joy Silver. "Billie Jean brings a new level of awareness and visibility to the issues facing LGBT people entering their second 50 years, and she's helping us change the face of retirement living for years to come."
Silver accepted the mission of developing the 30-year dream of LGBT retirement and formed RainbowVision to realize that dream by "envisioning our future ourselves." She currently serves on the board of directors for the GLBT Historical Society in San Francisco. Silver's experience includes over 25 years in the resort, healthcare and music industries, and she is a former member of the Subcommittee on Senior Housing for Senior Action in a Gay Environment (SAGE), a constituent group of the American Society on Aging.
