The first annual Gay and Lesbian Film and Theater Festival will present stage performance and film screenings next week in Mexico City.
Mexico City has played host to a number of gay- and lesbian-themed festivals over the years. The first annual Festival de Cine y Teatro Gay (Gay and Lesbian Film and Theater Festival or FICTGAY), kicking off next week, will mix stage and screen to offer its own take on gay and lesbian culture.
The festival, directed by Alberto Legorreta, will run from Tues., Jan 24 through Sun., Jan. 29.
According to Legorreta, the festival wishes to push beyond the traditional audiences to promote understanding and respect for all sexual orientations through creative expression.
FICTGAY was brought together largely due to the support of two key Spanish festivals, Mostra Lambda, from Barcelona and the Festival de Cine Gay in Madrid.
The performances and films in the festival will be presented in two venues, the Centro Cultural Helénico and Cinemas Contempo located in Zona Rosa.
The festival will open with the film "Saving Face" (Un amor diferente) by Alice Wu, starring Michelle Krusiec, Joan Chen and Lynn Chen. The film caused a stir last year at its premier in Sundance. Director Wu shared from her own personal experience as a Chinese-American gay woman in this light-hearted romantic comedy about facing cultural and generational gaps between a woman, her mother and the repressive culture her mother left behind.
FICTGAY will pay homage to a number of groundbreaking filmmakers including British director Derek Jarman, Mexican filmmaker Humberto Hermosillo, as well as presenting a selection of works from Spanish cinema.
