KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA - Bukit Bintang MCA Chairman Datuk Dr Lee Chong Meng urged the police to be more open-minded by not arresting women found in possession of condoms on the belief that they were involved in prostitution.
He said he had received complaints from three women who claimed they were arrested when police found condoms in their bags.
"It does not mean that women who carry condoms are prostitutes. There are many reasons for women to carry condoms.
"As for the three women, they carried condoms to protect themselves when having sexual relation with their respective partners. They are not prostitutes," he said at a National HIV/AIDS Awareness Campaign organised by the Young Malaysians Movement, here Sunday.
Lee said police should change their misperception of women carrying condoms. "Women have the right to carry condoms," he added.
The campaign at Petaling Street is the third out of the 20 locations for the campaign which was launched in December last year.
Lee, who is also the adviser for the Petaling Street Hawkers and Petty Traders Association said efforts were being made to overcome the "samseng' (gangster) culture in the Petaling Street area.- Bernama
