BRASILIA, BRAZIL - Hundreds of gay and lesbian activists have staged a mass kiss outside the Brazilian Congress.They were angry because Globo, the country's main television network, cut the first televised gay kiss out of the last episode of a soap opera.
The protesters also demanded the legalisation of same-sex marriages.
Record audiences tuned in on Friday to see the last instalment of America - even more than for the World Cup final - but the scene was unexpectedly cut.
There had been speculation for days whether the kiss between Junior and Zeca would be shown or not. To the anger of the actors and the soap opera's creator, it was not.
At first, Globo said that the kiss was never in the version that they had been sent.
Then, two days later, they admitted cutting it, causing an outcry from viewers.
The gay and lesbian community in Brazil is far more organised than in most of Latin America.
But the protesters outside congress complained that the censure of the kiss shows the country needs to change further.
They also demanded that a law to allow single-sex marriages, which has been held up for years, should be passed.
After the mass kiss, they were received by the president of the lower house, who promised to try to move the proposed law forward.
