Gay-Friendly Books Donated To Schools

ReadingBRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA - Saying a “cloak of silence” remains around homosexual issues in Surrey, the Gay and Lesbian Educators of B.C. announced Monday it will donate books combatting homophobic slurs to all public school libraries.
The Dealing With Name-Calling books are professional resources for educators and include background information, strategies and lesson plans for teachers to deal with students who call others names, and support those who are victims of anti-gay slurs.
There’s also lists of book, video and website resources teachers can turn to for help.
GALE’s Steve LeBel said part of the reason the books are being donated to Surrey is due to its “track record,” referring to matters such as the three-books issue, and the controversy surrounding Gay/Straight Alliance student clubs.
Surrey School Board chair Shawn Wilson said the board is being judged unfairly.
“I don’t think we’re closed or cloaked or homophobic.
“The strong, anti-gay, religious, right-wing view of homosexuality doesn’t fit in today’s world,” Wilson said.
The anti-name-calling handbooks, geared for Grades 5 through 7, will be provided to 120 Surrey schools. Surrey is the only district receiving the resources free of charge.
