SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH - Council members essentially sanctioned cohabitation - gay and straight - when they voted last week to offer subsidized health insurance to city employees' "adult designees."
But there were some lines they couldn't cross.
Councilwoman Jill Remington Love said council members privately debated allowing married employees to add another designee to their insurance. That would allow, say, an married employee to add her live-in mother.
But council members started working through possible scenarios, and it got complicated. Then they were confronted with this possibility: An employee called and wondered if he could remove his wife from the insurance plan and add his girlfriend.
For the record, only single employees can add an adult designee.
