Cristina Saralegui:: #6 of Top Ten Straight Advocates For Gay Rights

This is the sixth of a series of bois that I will be posting over the next few days on the people that The Human Rights Campaign picked as the Top 10 Advocates For The Gay And Transgender Rights.

Cristina SaraleguiCristina Saralegui: (Univision talk show host)

As one of Univision's best-loved talk show hosts, Cristina Saralegui makes her openness and support for the GLBT community a core part of the kindness and integrity for which her fans respect her so much. In 2002, for example, she withdrew as a host for “Hispanic Media 100” – an awards ceremony to honor Latino/a journalists – when she found out that one of the honorees, Eladio José Arnesto, was vocally anti-gay. “To honor Armesto, who has used his media experience and skills to defame and oppress others, is a slap in the face to the Miami community,” she said at the time. “He's equated gays and lesbians with child molesters and shown he has no interest in the core tenets of journalism: fairness and accuracy.” Ms. Saralegui is one of the most important voices for GLBT equality in America 's Spanish-speaking community.
