NEW YORK - Openly gay singers Rufus Wainwright and Michael Stipe were among the headliners at an anti-war concert this week in New York, marking the third anniversary of the US-led invasion of Iraq.
Rufus Wainwright’s song Gay Messiah, was greeted with overwhelming cheers from the audience. He finished his set with a version of Over the Rainbow.
The Judy Garland classic was a tribute to gay audience members and a snapshot from his much-anticipated Rufus at Carnegie Hall show, which will recreate Judy Garland's historic 1961 concert there.
"Do you ever have one of those decades?" R.E.M. frontman Stipe asked the crowd, before joining former Smashing Pumpkins guitarist andco-founder Iha and songwriter Joseph Arthur for a rendition of Arthur's In the Sun, which Stipe released as a single to raise money for Hurricane Katrina victims last year.
